Family Traditions

Create a Legacy of Traditions to Help Children Become Steadfast and Immovable

“What is the legacy we are giving [our children] today? What will it be tomorrow? It can start with us. Will their hearts and lives be full of traditions that make it easy for them to accept and follow the Lord and the latter-day prophets? Will we as families be able to claim the blessings promised, ‘that Christ, the Lord God Omnipotent, may seal you his, that you may be brought to heaven, that ye may have everlasting salvation and eternal life’ (Mosiah 5:15)? . . . As we become ‘steadfast and immovable’ in keeping the commandments of the Lord, we will secure the blessings of heaven for ourselves and for our families.”

Cheryl C. Lant, “Righteous Traditions,” Ensign, May 2008, 14

**I think family traditions are fun. Looking back on my childhood, I'm glad that my parents created some traditions in our family. Every Christmas, we would make homemade goody plates and deliver them to the families in our ward that my parents home taught and visit taught. All of us would pile into the family van and drive around town singing Christmas carols and visiting with other families. That's just one example. Years later, with my own kids, Sam and I try to create traditions our kids will remember and maybe pass down to their own families in the future. The "heart attacks" that we did around Valentine's Day was fun and our family always makes goody plates to deliver to families around Christmas.

Do any of you have any fun family traditions that you'd like to share?! They don't have to be holiday related. I'm always looking for fun new ideas.

when we get the tax return back we go out to eat somewhere and we leave a nice large tip. Most of the time the server is a college student working hard to pay for school. It's fun to leave and think of the big smile you may have put on their face.

I loved that talk! I listened to it over and over on car rides. One tradition we have is having a special Holiday FHE the Monday before each holiday (well actually just Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, and 4th of July, but maybe I'll think about adding Halloween to the list).
